Small businesses in WNC still struggling years after Helene

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A new survey shows three out of four small businesses in western North Carolina are still earning at or below pre-Helene revenues. The survey of more than 700 owners outlines a dropping tourism ripple effect, nearing two years post-storm.

Lake Lure’s Grafton Lodge owners Kim and Richard Sayles say lacking visitors is sparking winter financing concerns. Kim says, “(We’re) hanging on for dear life and making sure we can keep paying bills and staying here.” Richard adds, “Getting the word out that Lake Lure has been open since November 2024.”

Organizers say reviving tourism is the single greatest opportunity to strengthen the regional economy.
