National Weather Service Confirms EF0 Tornado In Catawba County

NEWTON, NC — The National Weather Service confirmed Tuesday that an EF0 tornado touched down in Catawba County during Monday’s storms.

Officials say the tornado touched down around 4pm about 3.5 miles southeast of Newton.

The tornado traveled about three miles, according to reports, and had estimated wind speeds of around 85mph. Officials say it traveled about 100 yards just off of Jack Whitener Road, broke up, and then touched down again near Smyre Farm Road just south of HWY 16 and traveled about 250 yards.

Damages in the area included moderate to large size trees being downed, uprooted, or snapped, according to officials. Building damages were mostly caused by falling trees and straight-line winds.
