NC Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Ban Same-Sex Marriage
RALEIGH, NC – Four North Carolina lawmakers want to ban gay marriage in the Tar Heel State.
HB 780, which was filed Tuesday, would ban same-sex marriage in North Carolina and refuse to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
HB 780 is being called the Uphold Historical Marriage Act.
“This is never going to pass. It’s absolutely ridiculous that it was even filed in the first place,” says Matt Hirschy with Equality NC.
Representative Larry Pittman from Cabarrus County, also a Christian pastor, is a primary sponsor.
So is Representative Carl Ford, whose district includes parts of Cabarrus and Rowan Counties.
The bill quotes the Bible and cites the 10th Amendment, asserting that the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage exceeds their authority “relative to the decree of Almighty God.”
