Residents Speak Out After Some Commissioners Suggest ICE Agents Keep Order At Government Meetings

CHARLOTTE, NC — “I’m so upset, I’m so pissed off, I cannot believe that you would suggest bringing ICE agents here… I just can’t even imagine it,” said Whitney Smith.

Emotional community members called out Commissioners, specifically Jim Puckett and Bill James, for suggesting ICE join the commission meeting to deter immigrants from coming and disrupting like many did in protest at last weeks city council meeting.

“I think that is irresponsible,” said advocate Braxton Winston. “I think you should be paying attention to me Mr. James as opposed to looking down at your phone, and I think you guys should be representatives of the people.”

There was no large crowd like several commissioners suggested there would be. No added security, and no ICE present at the meeting.

After several people spoke, Commissioner Puckett responded and actually thanked them for their comments.

Commissioner Puckett said, “I am very proud of the way you talk about it, and if that is the way all communication happens then we will get along and we will make some progress.”

Commissioner Trevor Fuller also acknowledged all the speakers and thanked them. Fuller went on to say he found the call for ICE at their meeting repugnant.
