President Trump Delivers First Speech to Joint Session of Congress

WASHINGTON, DC – President Donald Trump repeated campaign promises during his first address to a joint session of congress.

“I am here tonight to deliver a message of unity and strength and it is a message deeply delivered from my heart,” Trump said.

The President delivered a strong nationalist message talking about topics like immigration and jobs.

“America must put it’s own citizens first. Because only then can we truly make America great again,” Trump said.

Winthrop Political Science Professor Dr. Scott Huffmon says Trump needs to win over skeptical Republicans.

“A success will, I believe, look like, members of his party saying, ‘OK, now we have clearly seen where we can work together,” Huffmon explains.

He says Trump needs them on board if he wants to keep promises like repealing Obamacare, lowering taxes, and improving infrastructure.

“They are looking for actual policy proposals and not just fiery rhetoric,” Huffmon says.

He adds for Trump, reaching out to Democrats isn’t a priority.

“Getting all hands on board within his own party comes far before trying to win over his opponents,” Huffmon explains.

One top priority will be getting focused on the budget.

“I think his first order of business is to push his budget that he’s gotta get before Congress. And we’ll see if there’s gonna be some in his own party that will oppose that,” Huffmon says.
