Here at Toyota of N Charlotte, we’re a full-service auto shop. We can take care of pretty much anything and everything when it comes to car maintenance, but we know that some customers like to take a DIY to their auto service, especially with some of the simpler tasks. To give you a hand at it, today we’re talking windshield wiper blades – specifically, how to change them.
How do you know it’s time to change windshield wiper blades?
It’s important that you change out your windshield wiper blades. They start to deteriorate over time due to wear and tear, especially if you live in extreme temperatures. When they start to fall apart, their performance suffers, and that means you don’t drive with a clear field of vision. This is very dangerous, so we’re here to tell you when it’s time to swap them out AND how to do it. Let’s see what our Charlotte Toyota service techs have to say about it!
How do you know when it’s time to change your windshield wiper blades? Well, one of the biggest indicators is that water is just being smeared around on your windshield rather than swept off of it, or that they leave streaks when they’re in motion. Either way, it prevents you from seeing out, so it’s a problem. Another indicator is if they’re making a squeaking noise; they should be silent when they’re in motion, and any noises are indicative of an issue.
Toyota of N Charlotte shares step-by-step instructions
So now that you know you’re due for a fresh set of wiper blades, how do you change them? Check out these step-by-step instructions:
1) Pull the blade up and away from the windshield.
2) Turn the blade so it’s perpendicular to the arm of the wiper. You should now be able to see a small tab.
3) Pull that tab until you hear a snapping noise, which means the blade is released.
4) Remove the blade from the wiper arm.
5) Replace the old blade with a new one, pushing it into place until you hear a snap.
6) Repeat with the other blade – it’s always smart to replace both at once.
However, a lot of wipers include step-by-step instructions on the back of the package including diagrams if you’re having trouble.
And don’t forget, if you’re still struggling to get your windshield wiper blades replaced, we can do it for you! DIY isn’t for everyone. We sell affordable options at our Charlotte Toyota parts store, and our service techs can help you install them so you know how for the future.
