ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Investigators say a student was arrested for bringing a gun and knife to West Rowan High School.
Authorities say the assistant principal was advised by a student that Stephen McClary could possibly have a gun on campus.
McClary was reportedly removed from class and asked if he had anything at school that he should not have. He is accused of removing a knife from his boot and giving it to the assistant principal.
A search of McClary’s backpack then revealed a .45 caliber handgun that was wrapped in a towel, according to a news release.
Officials say the gun was not loaded and there were no magazines found with the weapon or anywhere in the backpack.
Investigators determined the gun was obtained by McClary while he was visiting a relative in another state and the gun was taken without permission, according to a news release.
McClary has been charged with two counts of having weapons on campus or other educational property and carrying a firearm by a minor.
