Officials Say Sex Assault Reported On Winthrop University Campus Unfounded

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Officials say they did not find evidence to substantiate the allegation that a female student was pinned to the ground and sexually assaulted on Winthrop’s campus.

Officials were told the alleged assault happened on October 29th.  Winthrop Police say the student claimed she was looking for a lost item in the area behind Bancroft by Margaret Nance and Owens Hall when she stumbled to the ground.

That’s when police say the victim claimed an unknown subject approached her, pinned her to the ground and sexually assaulted her before leaving the area on foot.

Winthrop Police say they recently completed a thorough investigation, including review of video footage of the area at and around the time of the alleged assault.  Police say they found no evidence to substantiate the allegation that an assault occurred or that an assailant was present on campus.

Officials have not released any additional information.
