Panthers Coach Explains Decision To Not Start Cam Newton

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Panthers head coach Ron Rivera addressed the media in reference to his decision to not start Cam Newton during Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Rivera said Newton did not start due to disciplinary reasons.  He went on to say that it was a travel dress code violation and his decision was to treat Newton like he treats any other player.

Rivera said he planned to sit Newton out for the entire first series but back up quarterback Derek Anderson threw an interception on the first play of the series.

Newton also addressed the media about the incident.  He said he was in violation because he was not wearing a tie while traveling.  He said he was out of town and had sent all his clothes back so he did not have a shirt that looked appropriate with a tie.

Newton went on to say that the Panthers did not lose the game over a tie.  The Panthers were crushed in the Sunday night football game 40-7.
