(PAWTUCKET, RI,) — Chris Marrero continued his magical month at the plate for the Pawtucket Red Sox on Saturday. The former Charlotte Knights slugger launched a two-run home run to help lead the PawSox to a 6-4 win over the first place Knights in game three of the four-game series from McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, RI on Saturday.
Marrero began this week by earning International League Batter of the Week honors after hitting .577 from July 4 through 10. On Monday, July 11, the reigning IL Batter of the Week slugged 44 home runs over three rounds in the 2016 Harris Teeter and Tide+ Triple-A Home Run Derby presented by Clariant. He was crowned the Home Run Derby champion for his efforts and took home the championship belt. Two days later, his solo home run helped the IL beat the Pacific Coast League 4-2 in the 2016 Sonic Automotive Triple-A Baseball All-Star Game presented by Gildan. He was named the Top Star for the IL.
On Saturday, Marrero ripped a two-run home run off Charlotte starter Chris Volstad (6-8, 4.90) during a four-run third inning. The home run was Marrero’s 17th of the season and fifth in 11 games during the month of July. Overall for the season, he’s hitting .295 (95-for-322). While Marrero was once again sharp at the plate, Pawtucket’s starter, Henry Owens (6-5, 4.07), was on point on the mound.
Making his 16th start of the season, the soon-to-be 24-year-old left-hander tossed 7.2 no-hit innings before allowing his first hit of the game. With two outs in the eighth inning, he allowed a single to Jake Peter. It was the only hit he allowed on the night. After loading the bases in the eighth inning on two walks and one hit, Owens was replaced by reliever Chandler Shepherd. That was good news for the Knights.
Jason Bourgeois clobbered a three-run double off Shepherd, which cut the lead in half, 6-3. In all, Owens gave up three runs on one hit over 7.2 innings pitched and earned the victory. The Knights tacked on one more run in the game off Shepherd and did so in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI groundout by Kevan Smith.
Volstad was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits over six innings of work. He allowed a total of three home runs to the PawSox, including the two-run home run by Marrero, and solo shots by Dan Butler and Chris Dominguez. Relievers Juan Minaya and Matt Purke each threw a scoreless inning out of the Charlotte Knights bullpen.
The two teams will conclude their series on Sunday from Pawtucket, RI with a 1:05 p.m. game. Pre-game radio coverage starts at 12:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte 730 AM and CharlotteKnights.com. The “Voice of the Charlotte Knights” Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
